Indian Psychiatric Society-North Zone (IPS-NZ) was founded in January 1978. The Zone includes the states of New Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan and the Union Territories of Kashmir, Jammu, Leh and Ladakh, and Chandigarh. The first Annual Conference of IPS-NZ was held at Patiala in December 1978 under the President ship of Dr. Gurmeet Singh. Over the years, the Annual Conference of the zone has been held regularly, except for few exceptions. No conference could be held during 1979–1981. From 1982 onward, the Annual Conference is held every year in different states of the NZ.

Journal of Mental Health and Human Behaviour, the official journal of the IPS-NZ was started in 1996, with Prof. NG Desai as the editor of the inaugural issue. Over the years, the journal has been publishing two issues in a year.

The journal is currently registered in following abstracting indices Baidu Scholar, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, EBSCO Publishing's Electronic Databases, Ex Libris–Primo Central, Google Scholar, Hinari, Infotrieve, National Science Library, Netherlands ISSN center, ProQuest, TDNet, and Wanfang Data. The journal is also indexed with DOAJ, Indian Science Abstracts.

The website ( of the IPS-NZ was launched in 2009.

[Table 1 lists the office bearers of the IPS-NZ since its inception to till date.{Table 1}

Many members of the IPS-NZ have occupied the office of IPS main body [Table 2].{Table 2}

Over the years on 12 occasions, the Annual National Conferences of IPS has been held in the NZ [Table 3].{Table 3}

Besides the Annual Conference, the IPS-NZ also started holding the mid-term CME of the zone. Details of the mid-term CME could trace from 1994 [Table 4].{Table 4}

The postgraduate development program (PGDP) started in the IPS-NZ in the year 2001, with first PGDP program being held at Surajkund [Table 5]. The PGDP program came under the aegis of IPS-NZ from 2010 onward.{Table 5}

In the year 2021, under the leadership of Dr. Sandeep Kumar Goyal, the zone started the online CME activity, on every Wednesday and till now 15 such CMEs have been held.
